Varsity Girls Do it again, win state championship in 2022 with a thrilling finish against mason, title is 9th total for the kearsley girls and 2nd in a row!
The Kearsley varsity girls bowling team began the season in mid November with a lot of question marks. With a brand new coach in Kailee Tubbs and many new bowlers, the season looked like it could be one of the more difficult seasons in many year's for the Kearsley girls. But with 1 returning starter (Sarah Ritchie) and a Senior with a lot of experience (Lydia Boggs), this team never backed down. They started the season with victories in the Flint Metro Conference but were not getting the victories in tournaments like previous teams. Consistent at making cuts but faltering in match play was the way to put it for the season for the girls, but they never doubted themselves. The girls lost a Metro Conference match for the first time in 13 years as the Flushing girls defeated them 16-14 in the last match of the season in mid February, the loss did not affect the conference standings as the Kearsley girls still won the Flint Metro Conference Title for the 13th straight year with a 10-1 record and they were still ranked #1 in the state going into the Regionals but it was at this time that coach Kailee Tubbs said the team really came together, when they bowled in the Regional Tune Up Tournament they realized they had something special and they could make a run at a state title again this year. The girls had to travel to Monitor Lanes in Bay City once again for Regionals, this has been a theme for many years as the girls from Bangor John Glenn put together a fantastic Regional performance to win the Regional title and the Kearsley girls had to settle for 2nd, a little disappointing but they still qualified for the finals. Kailee says the team never faltered, they were very confident going into the team event at the state finals despite the fact they didn't win the regional title. In the state finals the Kearsley girls were on fire in qualifying and grabbed the #1 seed for match play and looked like the team to beat. In the first match play game against Lakeshore, the Kearsley girls were in trouble, they were down the entire match and it looked like the season may come to an end as they entered the 9th frame of the individual game down by almost 70 pins, things seemed bleak, but the girls never quit and when it came down to the end of the game anchor bowler Sarah Ritchie struck out for the Kearsley girls to pull out an improbable win and give the girls the boost they needed to realize they could beat anyone. The 2nd match play game in the state finals, the Kearsley girls bowled against Carelton Airport and it was a back and forth battle that the Kearsley girls never let up with and as the game came down to the 10th frame, this time it was Sophomore Ava Boggs with an important 10th frame as she had a strike working in the 9th frame and she struck out in the 10th frame to help push her team to victory and into the finals. The final match was a repeat of last year's final when Kearsley had to bowl Mason and it marked the 3rd straight year that these 2 teams have faced off. Mason won the title in 2020 and Kearsley in 2021 and the final match was a nail biter as the teams went back in forth in the final match as it came down to the 10th frame of the final game to determine the winner, as it turned out the most important bowler for the Hornets in the final match would be Senior Lydia Boggs who had a strike working in the 9th and with the Kearsley girls holding a slim lead, Lydia went up and calmly threw 3 strikes to seal the deal for the Lady Hornets as they won the state championship for the 2nd straight year and it turned out to be the 9th state title for the Kearsley girls. What a storybook ending to an incredible season for the Kearsley girls who will continue to be a team to be watching next season as this team only had 1 senior on it. Congratulations to each and every girl on this team who fought all season long and won the ultimate prize at the end. Congratulations to Alexandra Kash, Hannah Burke, Hannah Pollick, Ava Boggs, Lydia Boggs, Sarah Ritchie and Jozzy Smith and head coach Kailee Tubbs and assistant coach Jeff Timm on the 2022 State Championship!
Megan Timm Wins Individual State Title as 2 girls Make the Cut in State Finals
Kearsley Varsity Girls bowling sent 4 girls to the MHSAA state finals in the Singles Event on Saturday, March 6th at Century Bowl in Waterford. The day started pretty good for all 4 Juniors as Allison Eible bowled well the first few games and Megan Timm, Allison Robbins and Emilea Sturk all were in contention early. in game 3 Megan Timm had a 202 game, Allison Robbins a 201 game and Emilea Sturk bowled a 187 game as all 4 girls were in contention to make the cut. In game 4 both Megan Timm and Allison Eible had 200 games to remain in contention as Allison Robbins and Emilea Sturk fell back to the 160's. Megan and Allison Eible continued to plug along and fill frames and at the end of 6 games it was obvious that Allison Eible was going to make the cut, nobody knew if Megan would make it as she had a 6 game total of 1123 and it looked as if Allison Robbins and Emilea Sturk would come up a little short of making the cut to the top 16. When the final standing were announced, Allison Eible qualified 12th with a score of 1140 and Megan Timm qualified 15th with a score of 1123, Allison Robbins finished 28th with a score of 1053 and Emilea Sturk finished 41st with a score of 1007. With 2 girls making the cut Kearsley had a shot at a state title in singles. In the first round match up, Allison Eible had to bowl against Freshman Ryan Giese from Carelton Airport and Megan Timm had to bowl against the defending State Champion Omani Morales from Cedar Springs. Allison Eible fell in her match by a score of 403 to 324 and Megan Timm would upset the defending state champion by a score of 355 to 327. Megan now moved into the final 8 and a match against Julia Struck from Bangor John Glenn. Megan fell behind by 19 pins after dropping the first game 180 to 161 but Megan fought back to win the 2nd game 182 to 149 and she won the match by a final score of 343 to 329. Megan was now in the final 4 and had to bowl against Freshman Kayla Taffenelli from Warren Woods Tower. Kayla is the first 2 handed girl bowler to make it to the final 4 in state finals in singles and she came out strong winning the first game 191 to 173 against Megan. Megan was just in the same situation the match before and trailing by 18 pins didn't rattle her as she came back strong the 2nd game and won the game 217 to 172 and won the match 390 to 363 to move into the finals. In the finals Megan would have to bowl against Ryan Giese the Freshman from Carelton Airport who eliminated Allison Eible in the first round of match play. Megan would begin the finals by winning the first game 182 to 141, the 182 game featured 3 big strikes in the 10th frame to open the lead to 41 pins with 1 game to bowl. The final game of the tournament saw Ryan Giese settle in an begin to bowl well but Megan would not be denied as she hung with her the entire match and although Ryan won the final game 212 to 192 it was not enough as Megan Timm won the match 374 to 353 to win the Individual State Title. The individual title for Megan is the 3rd singles title for Kearsley girls as she joins Lindsey Ploof and Hannah Ploof as the only Kearsley girls to ever win an individual state state. The win also guarantees that Megan has made 1st Team All State. Congratulations Megan Timm, what a way to end the season!
Varsity Girls team finishes 3rd in state finals to end state title string at 6
The varsity girls team participated in the 2020 MHSAA State Finals at Century Bowl in Waterford on Friday, March 6th. The girls began the day with a Baker game of 211 but then the wheels started to come off as they dipped to a 133 game the second Baker game. The other 6 Baker games in qualifying were 173,137,165,165,137 and 182. After the 8 Baker games the Kearsley girls somehow were in 8th place out of the 18 teams bowling for the state title. With 2 individual games left in qualifying it seemed as if the Kearsley girls would turn it on but the first individual game the Kearsley girls just couldn't get it going as they had an 809 team, one of their lowest team games of the season and the Lady Hornets dropped to 10th place, with only the top 8 teams making the cut, the thoughts turned to just trying to make the cut and move up to 8th place. The last individual game the Lady Hornets seemed to start to put something together but still only managed an 880 game, for a team that averages 980 on the season this didn't seem like it was going to be enough at first, but as everyone started to notice the scoring was very low and the 880 game was the 2nd highest game of the 18 teams bowling. It was then obvious that the Kearsley girls would make the cut and have a chance to continue the streak. When the final scores were announced, the Kearsley girls moved from 10th to 5th in the final qualifying standings. With a #5 seed the Kearsley girls would get to bowl the #4 seed Grand Rapids Northview. Once the Kearsley girls entered match play it seemed as if they were ready to go as they defeated Northview in both Baker games and then put togehter a 967 team game to move into the final 4. The next match was against the #1 seeded team of Mason and they began the match by dropping both Baker games and were trailing by 56 pins going into the individual game, the Kearsley girls just couldn't seem to put anything together against Mason as the Mason girls held them off and eventually won the team game 877 to 845 to end the Kearsley girls season. The girls from Mason went on to win the state title for the first time in the schools history. The loss by Kearsley ended a 6 year streak as state champions, an incredible run that will be extremely hard to match. Still nothing wrong with a 3rd place finish in the state finals. Congratulations on a great season girls!
